Diane Alexis Whipple Memorial Scholarship (DAWMS)

The Diane Alexis Whipple Foundation was created to honor the memory of Diane Alexis Whipple by her life-partner and family.  Diane Alexis Whipple had a desire…"to provide opportunities to help individuals achieve their educational and professional goals".  

The first Diane Alexis Whipple Memorial Scholarship was awarded at the 2004 Symposium on Deafness, Language and Learning last October.  The CRID DAWMS Scholarship committee is now accepting applications for the second round of scholarships.  Awards will be made at the 2005 CRID State Conference, held April 15th -17th in Colorado Springs.  Applications will be accepted from the following categories:

  1. Professional Interpreter (must be a member of RID and CRID)
  2. Interpreter Preparation Program Student (must be a member of CRID and SCRID)
  3. Deaf Community Member (must be a member of CRID)

Scholarships will be awarded to help CRID members "achieve their educational and professional goals" in the following areas:

  1. Students in their final semester of the Interpreter Preparation Program
  2. Members working on an advanced degree (Bachelors, Masters, or Doctorate)
  3. Members working to improve their skills through a formalized mentorship
  4. Members seeking creative ways to advance their education and knowledge relating to interpreting (i.e. ASL linguistics classes, the Master Mentor Program, a summer at Gallaudet or with the National Theater of the Deaf, etc)

 Deaf Community Member

Application Criteria:  Membership in CRID or the ability to document involvement in the field of interpreting.

To apply:  Submit the following documentation:

  • Letter of interest including:
    • Statement of financial need
    • Current involvement with CRID
    • Current and future goals in the field of interpreting
  • Completed request for funding proposal (RFP)
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation, one from each of the following:
    1. Personal (friend, family etc)
    2. Professional (from someone in the field of interpreting)
    3. Someone of your choosing that you feel will best support your request

Be sure that each letter includes something that indicates how long you have known this person and in what capacity.  

  • Verification of membership in CRID (copy of current membership card or letter from organization)

Failure to provide all necessary information will disqualify your application.
