WE DID IT!

The provisional certification trainees.

The provisional certification training at the Front Range Community College provided by Glenna Ashton with the national American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) took place on Saturday, February 26, 2005. Glenna of Boca Raton, Florida, now teaches ASL levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 for hearing high school students. She has taught Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing adult and K-12 students in a wide variety of settings for over 25 years. She was president of Florida ASLTA for ten years.

Five major topics were emphasized in the training. They were 1) statistical report on the certification, 2) the requirements for three different levels of certification, 3) the application of the certification, 4) the requirements to include in the course syllabus and lesson plans, and 5) the quality and quantity of information included in the video to document the competency using ASL, and the experience and familiarity with teaching ASL.  The trainees have 60 days to mail their materials and it will take several months to receive the certification or to retake the test.

Funding for the certification training and the fees for the national ASLTA membership, certification, video dubbing, and lunch was made possible through a grant from the Colorado Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
